With just under six weeks to go organisers Keep Wales Tidy are predicting that this year’s seven day nationwide clean-up of littered and vandalised black spots is set to be the biggest yet.
From 20 to 26 September under the banner of ‘Tidy Wales Week’ 60,000 volunteers are joining together in the battle to make Wales a cleaner country.
Half of the free clean-up kits have been snapped up by community groups, schools and businesses throughout Wales who are eager to get started with their clean-up projects in September.
Since the date and details of the volunteer clean-up was announced, around 126 schools, 193 community groups, 38 Communities First partnerships, 93 public sector agencies, and many businesses throughout Wales have already ordered clean-up kits.
Over 470 events have already been planned by various groups across Wales. The Builth-Wells Youth Club will be involved in an evening clean-up of their local area to support Tidy Wales Week. The club has taken part in Tidy Wales Week previously and a spokesperson for the group explained.
"We took part in the event last year and the young people really seemed to enjoy it so we would like to take part again."
The initial Tidy Wales Week was launched just over five years ago and resulted in many of the nation’s black spots being restored to their former glory; organisers are hoping that the latest assault will result in many more litter-free communities.
The kits, sponsored by the Welsh Assembly Government, include all the essential clean-up products needed, guidance notes on how to organise a fun, safe clean-up event, publicity materials and tabards to keep participants clean and dry.
